Alex Coal: charcoal, games and the Horde Mother name
In her 2017 interview, Coal explained how drawing, games and horror found their way into her public identity.
Charcoal and a short name
Coal described herself as a studio artist who used charcoal in much of her work. That material supplied the surname for her professional name.
She wanted a name she could keep: short, memorable and easy to spell. She also said its more masculine sound made it distinctive in search results.
The poster and the swarm
A zombie poster appeared behind her during live broadcasts. Viewers asked about it, and shared jokes developed from the conversations about horror.
She linked the nickname Horde Mother to StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm. The Queen of Blades and her Zerg army supplied one part of the idea; a horde of zombies supplied the other.
Sharing an interest
Coal said the horror imagery grew out of interests she had shared with her viewers. Their response encouraged her to keep that part of herself visible.
She described the resulting nickname as a joke that developed over time. Her explanation ties the name to those conversations, rather than to a character she played in a film.
